On April 24th, 2023, Extinction Rebellion NYC conducted a demonstration commonly referred to as a "bank takeover" at the main offices of Citibank. The purpose of this demonstration was to call upon Citibank to acknowledge and address the urgent and complex issues related to climate change and ecological crisis. Additionally, the demonstration aimed to hold Citibank accountable for its failure to comply with internationally-recognized human rights standards regarding Indigenous Peoples in its financing activities. Specifically, Citibank's significant funding for new fossil fuel extraction and its support of the fossil fuel industry were called into question.
